Artists have always fascinated others with their ability to translate their inner thoughts, emotions, and imagination into tangible forms that captivate our senses. Whether it's through painting, music, writing, dance, or any other medium, creatives possess a unique mindset that enables them to create masterpieces that resonate with people on a deep, emotional level.
An interesting inquiry is that of looking into the artist's mindset. Are there specific qualities and attitudes that make artists special and if so, can others incorporate some of these principles into their lives? Some of the qualities the creative journey develops are:
Resilience
Vulnerability
Overcoming procrastination and perfectionism
Challenging the mindset of not being good enough
Learning not to compare themselves to others
Embracing a growth mindset
Following their curiosity
Daring to be different
At the core of the artist's mindset lies a deep dedication to the imperative of creativity. Artists tend not to be bound by convention; they are explorers of the unknown. They are willing to take risks, break boundaries, and push the limits of their craft to produce something truly unique. This openness to creativity is a quality we can all adopt in our lives, whether we consider ourselves artists or not. By embracing creativity, we can approach challenges with fresh perspectives and find innovative solutions.
One of the challenges that artists often have to wrestle with is that of vulnerability which initially surfaces during the learning process. By and large, adults tend to think that they should be able to paint or draw perfectly from the get-go. When this doesn't happen they get angry and frustrated with themselves.
Children on the other hand tend to approach the same process from the perspective of curiosity and the joy of learning new things.
The willingness to be vulnerable and authentic allows an artist to connect with their audience on a profound level. In our lives, we can learn from this by embracing our true selves, being open about our experiences, and forging genuine connections with others.
Adults have to relearn the ability to fail at something. This is probably one of the most challenging things I find, for adult students. It's like they need to learn to give themselves permission to do something imperfectly. To embrace the concept that mistakes are part of growth. I call it failing forward.
Artists constantly seek to improve and evolve their craft. When they have been creating for a while, they view mistakes and failures as opportunities for growth rather than as obstacles. This growth mindset encourages us to embrace challenges and view setbacks as stepping stones toward our own personal and professional development.
Creating art is rarely a smooth journey. Artists face countless setbacks, failures, and moments of self-doubt. However, their unwavering perseverance and resilience enable them to keep going despite these challenges. This mindset teaches us the importance of determination and resilience in the face of adversity, helping us stay focused on our goals and overcome obstacles in our own lives.
Artists have a keen sense of curiosity and a deep appreciation for the world around them. They observe the intricacies of life, noticing details that often go unnoticed by
others. This heightened sense of observation allows them to infuse their work with depth and meaning.
What do you think is the most valuable quality one can have when on a creative journey?
curiosity and become more present by taking the time to appreciate the beauty and complexity of your own surroundings.
Passion is the driving force behind every artist's work. They pour their hearts and souls into their creations, often sacrificing time, comfort, and even financial stability to pursue their art. We can adopt this level of dedication in our own pursuits by finding what truly excites us and committing wholeheartedly to our passions.
The artist's mindset is a powerful force that drives creativity, authenticity, and resilience. While not everyone may consider themselves an artist in the traditional sense, we can all benefit from adopting some of these qualities and attitudes in our own lives. Embracing creativity, vulnerability, perseverance, curiosity, a growth mindset, and passion can help us lead more fulfilling and meaningful lives, allowing us to create our own unique masterpieces in the world.
expressed through their work. They tap into their deepest emotions and experiences, sharing them with the world in a raw and unfiltered manner.
