More About the Whale Shark
Whale Sharks (Rhincodon typus) are the world's largest fish, inhabiting tropical and warm-temperate oceans globally. These gentle giants can grow up to 40 feet long, characterized by a distinctive pattern of white spots and horizontal stripes on a blue-gray background. As filter feeders, they use specialized gill rakers to consume massive quantities of plankton and small marine organisms while swimming with their enormous mouths open.
Classified as endangered by the IUCN, whale sharks face significant threats from commercial fishing, habitat destruction, and bycatch.
